What is Stepper Motor?

Introduction:
• It is an electromechanical device which converts electrical pulses into discrete mechanical movements.
• The spindle of stepper motor rotates in discrete steps when electrical pulses are applied in proper sequence.
• Sequence of pulses is directly related to direction of motor shafts rotation. Speed of motor shafts rotation is directly related to frequency of pulses. Moreover the length of rotation is directly related to number of applied input pulses.
• As shown there are two main parts viz. stator and rotor. It draws power for its stator coils at constant level which does not vary with speed.

Advantages of step motors are low cost, high reliability, high torque at low speeds and a simple, rugged construction that operates in almost any environment. The main disadvantages in using a stepper motor is the resonance effect often exhibited at low speeds and decreasing torque with increasing speed.

Our stepper motor are widely used in engraving machine, cutting plotter, textile machine, 3D printer, medical devices, stage lighting equipment, robot, CNC machine, music fountain and other industrial automatic equipment.

 

The stepper motor works on the principle that the rotor aligns in a particular position with the teeth of the excitation pole in a magnetic circuit. The minimum reluctance path exists with the excitation pole The excitation depends on the number of input pulses. It actuates a train of step movements in response to the train of input pulses.

The output of a stepper motor is completely determined by the number of input pulses given to the system. The step movement can be either angular or linear and it can be either in the clockwise or anti-clockwise direction. Each pulse input actuates one step movement and each revolution of the stepper motor consists of a number of discrete step movements.
